Fall Wedding Attire 101: From the Ceremony to the Reception

It’s always wedding season at Tip Top, and with fall around the corner, it’s time to prep for the changing temps. Fall is a beautiful time for weddings - no one needs to worry about sweating through their suit or bundling up.

During fall you can anticipate beautiful transitioning leaves, quiet nights, and holding your loved ones tight if you didn’t anticipate the evening chill.

That’s the situation with autumn: it’s not so cold during the day but it tends to dip 5-10 degrees into the night. Trying to find the balance between not overheating and not freezing is the game plan here.

But don’t worry. We have everything you need to stay comfortable at your next fall wedding.

Choosing the Right Fall Material

The right material is often the first step to solving your chilly dilemma. Opt for a material that’s thicker & heavier in weight and robust enough to face any winds.

Wool blends are a go-to solution as it is naturally wind and water-resistant, and helps to regulate your body temperature. That means it wicks away any sweat to prevent chills while keeping you nice and toasty.

You may also see soft polyester-blends that are combed and woven to keep you just as warm but without the cost. Try and find options that use recycled polyester which re-uses materials that were destined for the landfill. Staying stylish can also be good for the planet.

If you’re planning on cutting up the dance floor, look for a blend that features elastane or spandex. It’ll give you the right amount of stretch - no one needs to see you rip a hole in your pants.

Fall Wedding Colours

Go for accents that complement the weather - think deep greens, burnt oranges, navy, and burgundy. Whether it’s your dress shirt, tie, or your suit, you’ll fit right in and look great in the outdoor photos!

What’s the Code? - Fall Dress Code 411

Depending on the dress code of the wedding, it will give you a different range of options to choose from. To learn more about wedding dress codes, check out our guide.

Formal Dress Code

Most formal weddings call for a suit. But this could be the perfect time to pull out a 3-piecer. Not only does this give you a classic look but it’ll also give your body an extra layer of weather protection.

For a budget-friendly option, check out G Grafton’s suit options. Mixing classic patterns like plaid with modern tech, they make finding warm and comfortable suiting easy.

Style Tip: If you want to add some extra colour to the mix, try mixing and matching your vest with your suit. With a matching jacket and pants, find a contrasting odd-vest to liven things up.

Casual Dress Code

With looser guidelines, casual weddings give you the flexibility to layer according to your personal comfort. You could try dressing down with a crew neck or turtleneck sweater underneath your suit. This is the perfect option if you’re not the shirt-and-tie type.

Sport jackets are also a great option since they’re typically made thicker and with more space in the body - perfect for layering. Try adding a quilted vest underneath to get full coverage and insulation. Check out this classic grey plaid sport jacket from our very own in-house design team.

If you want to forego jackets all together, try a cardigan or full-zip sweater.

Extra Protection - Fall Accessories

Sometimes you just need an extra piece or two to put the elements in their place - this is typical of early fall weddings.

Try a lightweight scarf for your suit or sport jacket. Fall scarves tend to be a bit thinner and more manageable than their thick wool winter counterparts. Effortlessly drape it over your neck for a clean look.

If you need to contend with the wind, try a weather-resistant mack jacket. Cut at thigh length, mack jackets are made from wind and water-resistant materials. Whatever Mother Nature has planned, you’ll be ready for it - while keeping your style fresh!
